Solara defines the meaning of "luxury with performance" a year after the Supra was discontinued because of its high price value.
Camry was never successful with it's two-door coupe.
Thus, Toyota introduced the Solara to fill in the gap between luxury and performance and used the name Camry Solara to bring out it's quality since most people were only familiar with the Camry.
Please note that the two cars are completely different, both exterior and interior, and there isn't one Camry emblem on the Solara not to mention that the Camry is about two to three thousand dollars behind the Solara.
Two decades ago, Toyota did the same by naming the first Supra "Celica Supra" to attract buyers until it was well known.
Today, the Solara is in the same situation...a two door Avalon with Supra performance!
(Solara sets the standard of the luxury coupe class and is placed between the Avalon and Camry according to various independent automotive reviews)
*Solara is 35% Avalon(3-Button Univeral Homelink System, Electronic Auto-Fade Rearview Mirror, 4-Sensor 4-Channel ABS, & 200HP Engine), 35% SC400(Coupe Body, Sport-Tuned Suspension & Muffler, and 180 Degrees Wood Grain Treatment), 15% Camry(Wood Dash, 6-Disc In-Dash JBL System with 8 Speakers, and Dual Side Airbags), and 15% TRD.
